What a Dental Nurse does:

A dental nurse supports the dentist in all aspects of patient care, this includes getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials and ensuring patients comfort. They will also take notes from dentists dictation for records and once the patient has left, the dental nurse tidies the surgery and sterilises all of the instruments.


Career Prospects:

Experience as a dental nurse is usually a requirement for those wishing to become a dental hygienist or dental therapist (sometimes known as oral health practitioners.) with experience and further training, dental nurses can also work as orthodontic therapists.


How to become a Qualified Dental Nurse:

You must first study at a training centre. They will be able to register you with the national examination board for dental nursing (NEBDN).

The following must be achieved to receive the full qualification Diploma in Dental Nursing; the students recognise and accept that failure to complete any part of the process will result in not successfully becoming a qualified Dental Nurse.

  • It is recommended that candidates are already in placements at the start of the course, however the latest must be by the 9th Week of the course in order to complete the entire record of experience in time for our deadlines.
  • A £20.00 charge is applicable for any copies of the record of experience which is a mandatory requirement by the NEBDN.
  • Complete all required written and practical elements from the record of experience.
  • Pass both elements in The Diploma Examination for Dental Nurses. 
     

The curriculum covers four domains of professional practice:

1. Clinical

2. Professional

3. Communication

4. Management and Leadership 

 

The competencies for each domain are expressed in terms of learning outcomes. That are:

 1. Practise safely and effectively, as set out in the GDC Fitness to Practice guidance making the high quality long term care of patients the first concern

2. Apply an evidence-based approach to learning, practice, reflective practice and decision making

3. Accurately assess own capabilities and limitations, demonstrating reflective practice, in the interest of high quality patient care and act within these boundaries

4. Describe the role and responsibility of being a registrant and demonstrate professionalism throughout education, training and practice in accordance with GDC guidance

5. Act with integrity and uphold high personal and profession

  • Patient Care and Management
  • Assessing Patient Oral Health Needs and training planning
  • Oral Health Promotion and preventive Dentistry
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Oral Surgery
  • Orthodontics Procedures
  • Dental Drugs, Materials, Instrument and equipment
  • Pain and Anxiety Control in dentistry
  • Radiography
  • Communication

Examination Structure and Fees:

  • National Examination Board for Dental Nursing will charge £320.00 to all applicants that wish to sit the Diploma Examination. This fee must be paid to A.G.E once the course commences. 
  • Record of Experience – £20.00
  • In order to be forwarded to the examination board the following must be met: 
    • Examination fees must be paid in full.
    • Completed record of experience.
    • Student has attended at least 80% of scheduled lessons.
    • Hold a valid CPR or Basic Life Support certificate. (will be provided by A.G.E)   
    • Achieve a reasonable score on the Mock Tests.
  • All the deadlines for the above requirements set by A.G.E. We reserve the right to set these deadlines.
  • The Theory examination will take place on a Saturday. A full list of examination centre's will be provided along with your application form for you to choose.
  • The exam is split into two elements that will take place on two separate occasions.
    • First element – written paper
      • 75 multiple questions (MCQs)
      • 50 Extended matching questions (EMQs)
      • 2.5 hours is allowed for the paper.
    • Second element – practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) assessment
      • 15 practical OSCE stations, each lasting five minutes, with two rest stations.   
  • Candidates will be expected to complete all paperwork related to the exam and the tutor will submit all these applications prior to any deadlines. These forms will be provided throughout the course duration. A.G.E will provide full details of any deadlines and information to ensure the highest quality of training and success rate.  

Vaccinations:

You must be vaccinated and up to date with the following:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Tetanus booster
  • All Childhood vaccinations   

Evidence must be provided in regards to all vaccinations prior to being able to work in any dental practice.
